Nobody opens an app to enjoy its navigation. They open it to pay a bill, book a table or find their size. When they manage it without thinking, the experience has done its job. When they have to stop and think, something got in the way.
That's why good UX is almost invisible. You notice it in what doesn't happen: no hesitation, no extra steps, no going back. Getting there isn't a matter of taste. It's a matter of method.
Start with the task, not the screen
Before we draw anything, we define what each person is trying to achieve and what's stopping them today. One good question saves weeks of design: what needs to happen for this person to finish what they came to do?
Five signs your product needs UX
- Your support team keeps answering the same questions.
- Users always drop off at the same step.
- Every team designs its own way, and the product no longer feels like one.
- New features get used far less than expected.
- Nobody remembers the last time anyone spoke to a user.
Test early. Test cheaply.
A simple prototype in front of five users reveals most of the problems that matter. There's no need to wait for a finished product: the sooner a mistake shows up, the cheaper it is to fix.
Design is deciding what to leave out. Whatever stays has to earn its place.
In the end, user experience isn't a layer you add to a product. It is the product. And when it's done right, all anyone remembers is that it was easy.
